Georgia Sweet Tea - Master Cookbook Recipe # 94

“The secret to a perfect gallon of Georgia tea is boiling your bags and letting it sit overnight. It gets sweeter and smoother as it chills!”, Tammy

This is recipe #94 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • The Tea: 3 family-size Tetley tea bags
  • The Sweetener: 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste after chilling)
  • The Water: Fresh water for boiling and filling the jug
  • Equipment: A clean, plain 1-gallon milk jug and a funnel

Instructions

  1. Boil: Fill a medium saucepan halfway with water. Add your 3 tea bags and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil the tea for exactly one minute.
  2. Steep & Cool: Remove from the heat and let the tea steep for 15 minutes. (Crucial: Do not pour boiling water into a plastic jug!)
  3. Prep the Jug: While the tea cools, place your funnel into the clean milk jug and add your sugar.
  4. Mix: Pour the warm tea through the funnel into the jug. Secure the lid and shake it vigorously until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  5. Fill: Add enough cold water to fill the jug, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Give it one more good shake.
  6. The Overnight Secret: Place the jug in the refrigerator. Do not serve it the same day. For the best flavor and natural sweetness, let it chill overnight.

Notes

Tammy’s Tips:

  • Sugar Adjustment: If you’re trying to cut back on sugar, start with 3/4 cup. If you like it "Southern Sweet," go up to 1 1/3 cups.
  • Patience is Key: Tea tastes much sweeter once it has fully cooled. If you drink it warm, you’ll be tempted to add more sugar than you actually need!
  • Emergency Chill: If you absolutely must have it today, pop the jug into the deep freezer until it's ice-cold before serving.
