Ingredients

  • The Tea:
  • 2 family-sized black tea bags (Tammy prefers Tetley)
  • 2 flavored tea bags (like peach or raspberry)
  • The Sweetener:
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • The Liquid:
  • 4 cups water (for boiling)
  • Cold water (to fill the gallon pitcher)

Instructions

  1. Boil: Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a kettle or pot.
  2. Simmer: Once boiling, add all four tea bags. Let them simmer for exactly one minute.
  3. Steep: Turn off the heat and let the tea bags steep in the hot water for 15 minutes to pull out all that rich flavor.
  4. Sweeten: Remove and discard the tea bags. Add the sugar while the tea is still hot, stirring until it is completely dissolved.
  5. Dilute: Pour the concentrated tea base into a 1-gallon pitcher. Fill the remainder of the pitcher with cold water and stir.
  6. The "Secret" Step: Place the pitcher in the refrigerator and chill overnight. This allows the sweetness to develop and the flavors to mellow.

Notes

Tammy’s Tips:

  • Adjusting Sweetness: If you need to drink the tea the same day, you may need extra sugar. For a lighter version, try 3/4 cup of sugar; for a traditional sweet tea, go up to 1 1/3 cups.
  • The Brand Matters: I personally prefer boiling my tea, and I’ve found that the Tetley brand doesn’t get bitter when boiled like some others do.
  • Cutting Sugar: If you’re looking to reduce sugar, do it gradually by cutting back 1/4 cup at a time until your taste buds adjust!
