Ingredients

  • Loaf of bread (Thick slices work best!)
  • 1-1/2 cups Milk (or orange juice for a citrus twist)
  • 3 Large eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp Granulated sugar
  • Salted butter (1 Tbsp per slice of toast)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Pancake syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk (or juice), eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar.
  2. Prep the Station: Pour the mixture into a shallow dish or pie plate large enough for dipping the bread.
  3. Heat the Skillet: Preheat a large skillet over medium heat and add enough butter to coat the bottom.
  4. The Dip: Dip each slice of bread into the mixture and flip quickly; repeat so both sides are dipped twice.
  5. Cook: Place the bread in the buttered skillet. Cook until the egg is set and the bread is a beautiful light brown.
  6. Flip: Turn the slice over and cook the other side until golden.
  7. Serve: Remove from the skillet, place on a plate, and immediately dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm with syrup, bacon, sausage, or fresh fruit!

Tammy’s Pro-Tips

  • The Bread Choice: While any bread works, thick-cut Texas toast or a sturdy brioche holds the custard better without getting soggy.
  • Quick Flip: Don't let the bread soak too long in the liquid, or it might fall apart before it hits the pan. A quick double-dip is all you need!
  • Orange Juice Twist: Using orange juice instead of milk is a fantastic way to brighten up the flavor profile for a summer brunch.
  • Buttery Goodness: Using a full tablespoon of salted butter per slice gives it that diner-style crispy edge that everyone loves.
