Easy Apple Cobbler - Master Cookbook Recipe # 423

This Easy Apple Cobbler is the definition of Southern comfort in a dish. By layering thinly sliced apples with warm spices and brown sugar, you create a deep, caramelized fruit base that softens beautifully as it bakes. The simple flour and milk topping forms a golden, slightly chewy crust that soaks up all those delicious apple juices. It’s a foolproof dessert that fills your whole house with the most wonderful aroma.

Ingredients

  • 5 Medium Apples (Golden Delicious or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/2 cup Salted Butter, melted
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar (divided into 1/4 cups)
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 cup Self-Rising Flour
  • Apple Pie Spice (to taste)
  • Ground Cinnamon (to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Butter a casserole dish well, then pour the remaining melted butter into the bottom of the dish.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and thinly slice your apples.
  3. Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, mix the self-rising flour with the milk until combined and set aside.
  4. Layer: Arrange a layer of apples in the casserole dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of the brown sugar, a dusting of cinnamon, apple pie spice, and a pinch of salt. Repeat these layers until all apples are used (aiming for about 3-4 layers).
  5. Assemble: Pour the flour-milk mixture evenly over the top of the final layer of apples. Do not stir it in! Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of brown sugar over the very top.
  6. Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 1 hour until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Serve: Serve warm, ideally with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tammy’s Tips

In my video tutorial, I used six apples, but I've found that five medium apples really give you the perfect fruit-to-crust ratio. The real secret here is making sure that last 1/4 cup of brown sugar goes right on top of the batter before it hits the oven,it creates a lovely, sweet crunch that everyone will fight over! Stick to these written measurements and you'll have the best cobbler you've ever tasted.
