Apple Pie, Tammy's - Master Cookbook Recipe # 426
This is my absolute favorite way to make a classic Apple Pie. By using Golden Delicious apples, you get a beautiful sweetness and a texture that holds up perfectly during the long, slow bake. Pre-baking the bottom crust ensures it stays crisp, while the high mound of seasoned apples creates a spectacular presentation. It’s a slow-baked labor of love that fills your home with the most incredible aroma.
This is recipe #426 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.
Ingredients
- 1 Deep-Dish Pie Crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 Refrigerated Pie Crust (for the top)
- 5 to 6 Large Golden Delicious Apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup Granulated Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Apple Pie Spice (or see Optional below)
- 4 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 cup Salted Butter, melted
- Cinnamon Sugar (for sprinkling)
- Optional Spices: If you don't have apple pie spice, use 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp cardamom (or just cinnamon). Optional Caramel Version: Add 1/4 cup of Caramel Sauce and an extra 2 tsp of flour to the filling before baking.
Instructions
- Pre-bake Crust: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Bake the deep-dish pie crust for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the sugar, salt, apple pie spice, and flour until well coated.
- Assemble: Mound the apple mixture into the pre-baked crust. The apples should sit 1 to 2 inches above the edge of the crust, as they will shrink during baking.
- Butter and Top: Pour half of the melted butter over the apples. Roll out the second pie crust, cut slits for steam, and place it over the apples. Crimp the edges to seal the two crusts together.
- Finish Top: Brush or pour the remaining melted butter over the top crust and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.
- Slow Bake: Reduce the oven temperature to 300°F. Bake the pie for 90 minutes.
- Serve: Let it cool slightly and serve warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Tammy’s Tips
Think Granny Smith is the best apple for pie? Just give the Golden Delicious a try, y'all! They have a natural honey-like sweetness that is just hard to beat. The secret to this pie is the slow bake at 300°F,it allows the apples to become perfectly tender and the juices to thicken into a rich syrup without burning the crust.
