Apple Crumble- Master Cookbook Recipe # 424

This "No Guilt" Apple Crumble is a lighter, fruit-forward dessert that doesn't skimp on flavor. By using a mix of tart and sweet apples and a hearty oat-and-pecan topping, you get a satisfying crunch and a warm, spiced filling without the heavy batter of a traditional cobbler. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a sweet treat while keeping things a bit more wholesome.

This is recipe #424 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • For the Filling
  • 7 Medium Apples (Granny Smith, Winesap, or Golden Delicious), peeled and chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
  • Juice of 1 Fresh Lemon
  • For the Crumble Topping
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2/3 cup All-Purpose Flour (White Lily recommended)
  • 4 Tbsp Salted Butter, sliced thin
  • 1 cup Old Fashioned Oats
  • 3/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Finely Chopped Pecans

Instructions

  1. Prep the Fruit: Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, and the fresh lemon juice until evenly coated.
  2. Make the Crumble: In a separate bowl, combine the 1/2 cup brown sugar and 2/3 cup flour. Add the thinly sliced butter and use a blending fork to work it in until the mixture looks crumbly.
  3. Finish the Topping: Stir the oats, cinnamon, and chopped pecans into the crumble mixture until well combined.
  4. Assemble: Grease a 2 to 3 quart baking dish well. Spread the apple mixture into the dish and sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit.
  5. Bake: Bake for 45 minutes. The apples should be soft and the topping golden brown.
  6. Serve: This is wonderful on its own or with a small dollop of whipped topping or yogurt.

Tammy’s Tips

The type of apple you use really matters here! I love a mix of Granny Smith for tartness and Golden Delicious for sweetness. Since some apples soften up faster than others, I recommend checking your dish after about 30 minutes in the oven. If the topping is getting too brown but the apples aren't quite tender yet, you can lightly tent it with foil to finish the cooking.
