Mushroom Gravy, Easy - Master Cookbook Recipe # 59
This rich and creamy gravy is the perfect companion for hamburger steaks, pork chops, or mashed potatoes. By using the pan drippings from your meat and swapping water for milk, you get a much deeper, more homemade flavor from a simple gravy mix.
This is recipe #59 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup McCormick brown gravy mix
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup chopped onions
- 3 Tbsp salted butter
- Note: Use the pan drippings from your fried meat (like Recipe #57 Hamburger Steak) for extra flavor.
Instructions
- Prep the Skillet: After cooking your meat, pour off any excess grease from the skillet. Ensure the remaining drippings are not burnt (if they are too dark or smell bitter, start with a clean pan instead).
- Sauté: Melt the 3 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sliced mushrooms. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and the onions are translucent.
- Mix: In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the McCormick brown gravy mix and the milk until smooth and no lumps remain.
- Thicken: Pour the milk mixture into the skillet with the mushrooms and onions.
- Simmer: Cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy reaches a boil, thickens, and becomes bubbly.
- Serve: Pour the hot gravy over your hamburger steaks or favorite side dish and enjoy!
Notes
Tip: For the best results, always whisk your gravy mix into cold milk before adding it to the hot pan; this prevents clumping and ensures a perfectly smooth gravy every time.
