Hamburger Steak - Master Cookbook Recipe # 57
This is a classic, simple Southern meal that relies on high-quality ground beef and the natural sweetness of sautéed vegetables. It’s quick enough for a weeknight but tastes like a Sunday comfort meal.

Ingredients
- 1 lb. 80/20 ground beef
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1 small bell pepper, sliced
- 3 Tbsp salted butter
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp steak seasoning (like Weber Steak 'n Chop)
Instructions
- Form the Patties: Shape the ground beef into patties that are about 3/4-inch thick.
- Sear: Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the hot skillet without adding any oil.
- Season: While the first side is searing, season the tops with salt, black pepper, onion powder, and steak seasoning.
- Flip: Cook for about 4 minutes on the first side until a nice brown crust forms. Flip the patties and cook for another 4 minutes.
- Sauté and Simmer: Add the sliced onions, bell peppers, and the butter to the skillet around the meat.
- Finish: Lower the heat to medium or low and cover the skillet with a lid. Simmer until the vegetables are tender and the patties are fully cooked through (ensure there is no pink in the center for safety).
Notes
Tip: If you like a lot of gravy, you can remove the meat and veggies once they're done and whisk a little flour and water (or beef broth) into the pan drippings to create a quick brown gravy to pour over the top!
