Ingredients

  • 1 slice Bread
  • 1 large Egg
  • To taste Salt and black pepper
  • To taste Salted butter
  • Optional: Shredded cheese
  • Tool: 2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter

Instructions

  1. Prep the Bread: Butter both sides of your bread slice generously. Use a 2-inch cookie or biscuit cutter to cut a hole out of the center of the bread.
  2. Start Browning: Place the bread in a moderately hot non-stick skillet. Brown the first side until golden.
  3. Add the Egg: Flip the bread over and immediately crack the egg into the center hole.
  4. Season: Sprinkle the egg with salt and black pepper.
  5. Cook to Set: Cook until the egg whites are set. Tip: You can cover the skillet with a lid for a minute to help the whites cook through completely without over-browning the bottom of the bread.
  6. Optional Finish: If desired, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top during the last minute of cooking and allow it to melt.

Notes

Pro Tips -

  • Don't Waste the Center: Toss the small bread circles into the skillet along with the bread slice! Brown them on both sides in the butter to make perfect little "dippers" for your egg yolk.
  • Perfect Timing: For a perfectly cooked egg, crack it into the hole as soon as you flip the bread. This allows the egg to finish exactly when the second side of the bread reaches a beautiful golden brown.
  • Get Creative: Use different shaped cutters for special occasions, like a heart shape for Valentine's Day or a star for the holidays!
