Ingredients

  • The Base:
  • 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
  • 3 Roma tomatoes, chopped
  • Seasonings & Aromatics:
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • The Finish:
  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed

Instructions

  1. Simmer: In a saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, chopped Roma tomatoes, chopped onion, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Cook: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to meld and the fresh tomatoes to soften.
  3. The Garlic Finish: Once the sauce has simmered, stir in the pressed garlic cloves. Adding the garlic at the end keeps its flavor bright and aromatic.
  4. Combine: Add your prepared Italian meatballs to the sauce and stir gently to coat.
  5. Serve: Ladle the sauce and meatballs over a bed of hot pasta. Top with plenty of shredded mozzarella cheese for the perfect finish.

Notes

Tammy’s Tip: The pinch of sugar is the secret to balancing the acidity of the canned and fresh tomatoes, giving you that smooth, old-fashioned taste every time!
