Apple Dumplings - Master Cookbook Recipe # 430
Nothing says fall like a fresh apple dumpling! These old-fashioned treats use a quick shortcut with refrigerated dough but keep that authentic, homemade taste. They are the perfect size for family gatherings or fall festivals, especially when drizzled with warm, homemade caramel sauce.
This is recipe #430 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.
Ingredients
- Dough: 1 refrigerated pie crust dough
- Fruit: 3 small to medium Gala or Golden Delicious apples (peeled, cored, and cut into wedges)
- Spices & Seasoning: 1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp salt
- Dairy: Salted butter (room temperature)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dumplings:
- Cut the Dough: Roll out your pie crust dough. Using the bottom of a crank sifter (or a similar round cutter), cut out six rounds.
- Decorative Leaves: Use any leftover dough to roll thin and cut out small leaf shapes with a paring knife or small cutter. Divide any remaining dough into six small parts to help seal the dumplings.
- Assemble:
- Spread room-temperature butter onto a dough round.
- Add 1 tsp of the cinnamon-sugar mixture and a dash of salt.
- Place one or two apple wedges in the center.
- Seal: Gather the dough up over the apple. Use the extra dough bits to ensure it is sealed well on top.
- Garnish: Top each dumpling with a dough leaf. Brush the leaf with butter and sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar.
- Bake: Place in the oven at 350°F and bake for approximately 30 minutes until the crust is a beautiful golden brown.
- To Serve: Serve these dumplings while they are hot! For the best experience, top them with Master Cookbook Recipe # 406: Homemade Caramel Topping.
Notes
Tammy's Tips
For the best results, use Gala, Fuji, or Golden Delicious apples since they offer a perfect balance of tart and sweet and hold their shape well while baking. If your pie dough is too cold to work with, a quick 10 seconds in the microwave will make it much more flexible for wrapping those apples!
