Streusel Topping, Muffins - Master Cookbook Recipe # 151

This topping is the perfect way to elevate a basic muffin recipe. The brown sugar provides a deep caramel flavor, while the butter and flour create those iconic crumbs that everyone loves to pick off the top. Adding pecans gives it that classic Southern crunch that goes so well with blueberry, apple, or pumpkin muffins.

This is recipe #151 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp salted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine: In a small mixing bowl, place the softened butter, brown sugar, and flour.
  2. Blend: Use a blending fork (or a pastry cutter) to work the ingredients together until the mixture is well-combined and forms a nice, crumbly texture.
  3. Add Crunch & Spice: If you're using them, stir in the chopped pecans and the ground cinnamon.
  4. Topping: Generously sprinkle the crumble over your unbaked muffins before they go into the oven.
  5. Bake: Follow the baking instructions for your specific muffin recipe. The streusel will melt slightly and then crisp up as it bakes!

Notes

Tammy’s Tip: "Make sure your butter isn't melted, just soft enough to work with. If it's melted, you'll end up with a paste instead of those pretty crumbles. I like to keep a little bowl of this ready to go whenever I'm baking; it just makes everything feel a little more special. And don't be shy with it, pile it on up there!"
