Squash, Butternut - Master Cookbook Recipe # 697
This simple, healthy preparation highlights the naturally sweet and nutty flavor of butternut squash. By steaming rather than roasting, you get a beautiful, tender texture that melts in your mouth, perfectly complemented by a touch of salted butter and seasoning.
This is recipe #697 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.
Ingredients
- 1 Butternut squash
- 3-4 Tbsp Salted butter
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Soften to Prep: Place the whole butternut squash in the microwave for 4 minutes to soften the skin, making it much easier to work with.
- Peel and Prep: Trim both ends and slice the squash in half. Using a sharp knife, peel off the outer skin. Be sure to remove the thin white layer underneath the skin, as it can sometimes cause a mild skin reaction when handled.
- Cube: Cut the prepared squash into uniform 1-inch cubes.
- Steam: Place the cubes in a steamer basket and steam for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.
- Season and Serve: Transfer the hot squash to a bowl and toss gently with the salted butter, salt, and pepper until well coated.
Notes
Tammy’s Tips
For the best results, try to cut your cubes as close to the same size as possible so they all finish steaming at the exact same time. If you want to add a little Southern sweetness, a tiny pinch of cinnamon or a drizzle of honey can really enhance the natural flavors of the squash. This is a wonderful, light alternative to heavier holiday side dishes that your family will just love!
