Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup nuts (chopped pecans or walnuts work great)
  • 1 cup orange slice ca

Instructions

  1. Cream the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and shortening. Beat until the mixture is light and creamy.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Add the eggs and mix well. Stir in the vanilla extract, salt, baking powder, and baking soda, ensuring everything is thoroughly combined.
  3. Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour, about 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a dough forms.
  4. Fold in Goodies: Stir in the chopped nuts and the chopped orange slice candy pieces by hand until evenly distributed.
  5. Form and Bake: Drop the dough by rounded teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375°F for 12 minutes.
  6. Cool: Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest on the sheet for 3 to 4 minutes. This allows them to set slightly before you transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Tammy’s Tips

To make chopping the orange slice candies easier, try lightly coating your knife or kitchen shears with a little flour or non-stick spray to keep the sticky candy from clinging to the blade!
