Ingredients

  • The Sauté:
  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 1/2-pint white mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 small onion, sliced into strips
  • The Sauce Base:
  • 4 cups beef broth (preferably unsalted or low sodium)
  • 5 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • The Finish:
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Aromatics: Melt the butter in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add your chopped mushrooms and sliced onions. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent, and the liquid released by the mushrooms has completely evaporated.
  2. Prepare the Slurry: While the vegetables are sautéing, whisk the beef stock and cornstarch together in a large measuring cup or bowl until completely smooth. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Thicken: Once the mushrooms and onions are ready, season them with the black pepper. Pour the stock mixture into the skillet.
  4. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring frequently. Continue to cook until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency and develops a beautiful, rich brown color.
  5. The Garlic Finish: Just before serving, add the pressed garlic clove and stir well to combine. Adding it at the end keeps that fresh garlic flavor bright!
  6. Serve: Pour generously over your hot Salisbury Steaks and enjoy!

Notes

Tammy’s Tip: Using a low-sodium beef broth allows you to control the saltiness of the final gravy, especially since the Salisbury Steak patties already have plenty of seasoning from the soup mix!
