Ingredients

  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 1 lb. 80/20 ground beef (formed into 3/4-inch patties)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 small bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 Tbsp salted butter
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp each salt & black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp steak seasoning
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 1/2 cup McCormick brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup chopped onions
  • 3 Tbsp salted butter

Instructions

  1. Sear the Steaks: Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties (no oil needed) and season with salt, pepper, and steak spices. Cook for 4 minutes per side until browned.
  2. Smother: Add the sliced onions, bell peppers, and 3 Tbsp butter. Lower heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are tender and meat is fully cooked. Remove the steaks and sliced veggies from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté Gravy Veggies: Pour off any excess grease, but keep the flavorful drippings. Melt 3 Tbsp butter in the same skillet. Add the chopped onions and sliced mushrooms, cooking until tender.
  4. Make the Gravy: Whisk the brown gravy mix with the milk until smooth. Pour the mixture into the skillet with the mushrooms.
  5. Thicken: Cook, stirring constantly, until the gravy becomes thick and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Place the hamburger steaks back into the gravy to coat, or simply pour the mushroom gravy generously over the steaks and sautéed peppers and onions.

Notes

Tip: The key is using milk in the gravy mix to create a richer, creamier texture than water alone.

Tip: Be careful not to burn the pan drippings while cooking the steaks. If they turn too dark or bitter, wipe the pan out before starting the gravy to ensure the best flavor!
