Ingredients

  • 1 lb. 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 egg, beaten (in a shallow dish)
  • Self-rising flour (for coating)
  • 1 small onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • Cooking oil or corn oil (for frying)
  • Seasonings:
  • Dry Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning
  • Steak seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Form and Season: Shape the ground beef into four equal patties. Season both sides of each patty with salt, black pepper, steak seasoning, and a generous sprinkle of dry Ranch seasoning.
  2. Breading Station: Dip each seasoned patty into the egg wash, ensuring it is fully coated. Then, dredge the patties in the self-rising flour, pressing firmly so the flour sticks to the meat.
  3. Sear: Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully add the breaded patties and cook for 4 minutes per side until they have a beautiful, golden-brown sear.
  4. Smother: Once the patties are seared, add the sliced onion rings and bell pepper strips to the skillet.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the skillet with a lid. Continue cooking until the onions and peppers are tender and the hamburger steaks are fully cooked through (no pink remaining).
  6. Serve: Enjoy these flavorful steaks hot with your favorite Southern sides!

Notes

The addition of the dry Ranch seasoning to the beef provides a tangy kick that sets it apart from traditional recipes. By breading the patties and then simmering them with fresh vegetables, you get the perfect balance of a crispy exterior and a juicy, smothered finish.

Tip: Using self-rising flour for the breading helps create a slightly puffier, lighter crust compared to all-purpose flour, making these steaks even more satisfying!
