Green Bean Casserole - Master Cookbook Recipe # 315
This is a special version of the classic side dish, elevated with a rich, from-scratch gravy instead of canned soups. The combination of fresh sautéed mushrooms, beef bouillon, and sour cream creates a deep, savory flavor that is truly "spectacular" for any holiday spread.
This is recipe #315 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.
Ingredients
- 2- 16 oz. packs frozen French-style green beans, thawed
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 pint sliced mushrooms, chopped
- 3/4 cup salted butter, divided
- 1/2 cup all-purpose or self-rising flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth (1 cup water mixed with 2 tsp beef bouillon)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 6 oz. French’s fried onions
Instructions
- Sauté Veggies: In a skillet, sauté the onions and mushrooms in 1/4 cup of the butter until soft. Combine them with the thawed green beans in a large bowl.
- Make the Roux: In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1/2 cup of butter. Whisk in the flour, salt, and pepper, and cook over medium heat until the mixture is browned and fragrant.
- Thicken Sauce: Gradually add the beef broth and milk. Whisk constantly over high heat until the gravy has thickened.
- Combine: Pour the hot gravy over the bean mixture. Stir in the sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce until well mixed.
- Bake: Transfer everything to a greased 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Top with the crispy fried onions and bake at 350°F for 40 minutes.
Notes
Tammy’s Tips "This is a green bean casserole I created using a homemade gravy instead of canned soups. It is delicious and perfect for your Thanksgiving table." Using frozen French-style beans gives it a better texture than canned, and that homemade gravy makes all the difference!
