Deluxe Grilled Cheese Sandwich - Master Cookbook Recipe # 581
This isn't your ordinary grilled cheese! By using a combination of sharp cheddar, melty American, and a secret layer of creamy cream cheese, you get a sandwich that is incredibly rich and gooey. Slathering the bread with butter all the way to the edges ensures every single bite is perfectly golden-brown and crispy.
This is recipe #581 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.
Ingredients
- 2 slices loaf bread
- Butter, room temperature
- Cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 slice Cheddar cheese
- 1 slice American cheese
Instructions
- Prep the Bread: Butter one side of both slices of bread, making sure to cover all the way to the edges.
- Add the Secret Layer: Place the two slices of bread together with the buttered sides facing each other. Spread a layer of room-temperature cream cheese on the top (non-buttered) side of one piece.
- Start the Grill: Place the bread, buttered side down, into a pre-heated skillet over medium heat.
- Add the Cheese: Place the slice of cheddar on one piece of bread and the slice of American cheese on the other.
- Cook and Melt: Let the sandwich cook "open-faced" for a few minutes in the skillet to help the cheese start melting.
- Flip and Finish: Close the sandwich and continue to cook, flipping once if needed, until the bread is a beautiful golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted.
- Serve: Remove from the skillet, cut diagonally, and serve immediately while it's nice and warm.

Tammy's Tips
Using room-temperature butter and cream cheese is the secret to getting a smooth, even spread without tearing your bread. The combination of American and Cheddar gives you that classic "pull" and great flavor, but that little bit of cream cheese is what really makes this "deluxe." Itβs the ultimate comfort food, especially with a bowl of tomato soup!
