Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage, grated
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp onion, grated
  • 1 carrot, shredded
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Prep the Veggies: Grate the head of cabbage, the onion, and the carrot. Set these aside in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk the Dressing: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, mayonnaise, buttermilk, milk, lemon juice, white vinegar, salt, and pepper. Whisk until the dressing is completely smooth and the sugar has begun to dissolve.
  3. Combine: Pour the dressing over the grated cabbage mixture. Toss and stir thoroughly to ensure every bit of cabbage is well-coated.
  4. The Secret Step: Place the slaw in an airtight container and refrigerate it overnight. This is crucial for the flavors to meld and the cabbage to reach that perfect "restaurant-style" consistency.

Tammy's Tips

Make sure you grate your onion and cabbage finely to get that authentic texture. The overnight soak in the refrigerator is what transforms the crisp cabbage into that tender, juicy slaw we all know and love. If you're in a hurry, try to give it at least 4 hours, but overnight is where the magic really happens! Enjoy, y'all!
