Ingredients
- The Base:
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1/4 cup salted butter (room temperature)
- The Flavor Boosters:
- 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1 tbsp unsalted salad spice blend
- 1 tsp onion powder
- The Liquid:
- 1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (or whole buttermilk)
Different Liquid Option
- 1 cup milk or lowfat buttermilk
Instructions
- Incorporate Butter: Place the self-rising flour into a large mixing bowl. Use a fork to cut in the room-temperature butter until it is well combined with the flour.
- Season and Cheese: Add the grated cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salad spice blend, and onion powder. Stir thoroughly to ensure the cheese and spices are evenly distributed.
- Mix the Dough: Gradually pour in the heavy whipping cream. Mix until the batter becomes sticky and all the flour is fully incorporated.
- Drop and Bake: Grease a baking pan. Using a large spoon, portion out heaping spoonfuls of the dough and drop them onto the pan.
- Golden Perfection: Bake in a preheated oven at 500°F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Notes
Tammy’s Tips:
- Cream vs. Buttermilk: Using heavy whipping cream makes these biscuits extra rich and tender, while buttermilk will give them that classic Southern tang. Both are delicious!
- Don't Overmix: Just like with rolled biscuits, you want to mix until the ingredients are just combined to keep them light and fluffy.
- Brush with Butter: For an extra "restaurant-style" finish, brush the tops with a little melted garlic butter as soon as they come out of the oven!
