Boston Butt, Crockpot - Master Cookbook Recipe # 489

This Crockpot Boston Butt is the ultimate "set it and forget it" comfort meal. By slow-cooking the roast with savory seasonings and a touch of liquid smoke, you get incredibly tender, fall-apart pork that is infused with a deep, smoky flavor right in your own kitchen. It’s a versatile dish that makes a wonderful family dinner and yields fantastic leftovers for sandwiches the next day.

This is recipe #489 in Tammy’s Master Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • 1 Boston butt roast
  • 1 Onion (cut into quarters)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • To taste No-salt-added salad spice blend
  • 1 tsp Liquid smoke (optional)
  • 3/4 cup Hot water
  • Optional: Fresh sage or other garden herbs
  • 1 Crockpot liner (for easy cleanup)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Crockpot: Line your slow cooker with a crockpot liner and place the Boston butt roast inside.
  2. Season: Generously season the roast with salt, black pepper, and your salad spice blend. If you have fresh sage or other herbs on hand, tuck them around the meat for extra aromatics.
  3. Add Aromatics: Arrange the onion quarters around the sides of the roast.
  4. Add Liquid: In a small bowl, mix the liquid smoke (if using) with the hot water. Carefully pour the liquid around the edges of the crockpot, taking care not to wash the seasonings off the top of the meat.
  5. Slow Cook: Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours until the pork is tender and easily shreds with a fork.

Notes

Tammy's Tips: Pork pairs beautifully with sweet potatoes, so consider serving this roast alongside some of our favorite sweet potato sides. If you have leftovers, they make incredible barbecue sandwiches, just dice up the pork and toss it with our signature CVC BBQ Sauce (Master Cookbook Recipe # 591). For a complete Southern spread, I love to serve this with my classic Potato Salad (Master Cookbook Recipe # 571) and creamy Coleslaw (Master Cookbook Recipe # 555).
