Ingredients

  • 1 box Devil's Food cake mix
  • Ingredients for cake mix: Eggs, water, and oil (as specified on the box)
  • 20 oz. can Cherry pie filling

Instructions

  1. Bake: Prepare the Devil's Food cake batter according to the package directions. Bake in two round cake pans and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Level: Once cooled, carefully trim the top "mound" off both cake layers to create flat surfaces.
  3. Crumble: Set the trimmed cake pieces aside and let them dry out slightly. Once dry, crumble the pieces through a handheld mesh strainer or the grid of a cooling rack to create fine chocolate crumbs.
  4. Assemble: Continue the assembly process using the filling and icing instructions in Master Cookbook Recipe # 269.

Tammy’s Tips

For the finest crumbs, ensure the trimmed cake pieces are dry before pushing them through your strainer. Using a serrated knife to level your layers will give you the cleanest cut and the best scraps for your chocolate crumble finish!
